Ken Dodd performs live at the Southport Theatre
Comic genius Ken Dodd OBE is back in Southport to sprinkle his own unique brand of comedy magic on a live audience on November 20th with his usual mix of comedy gags and songs.
The showbiz legend promises a fun-filled variety show for all the family. Join him to celebrate 50 years of happiness with The Squire of Knotty Ash.
Make your visit to the theatre even more comfortable by pre-booking a room at the Ramada Plaza Southport hotel (positioned next door) and a meal at the Southport Theatre before the show.
Dodd is known for his long performances, which of course means you get value for money, with this show lasting a total of five and a half hours. In fact, in the 1960s, he earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s longest every joke-telling session.
He managed to tell 1,500 jokes in three and a half hours at a Liverpool theatre, which equated to 7.14 jokes per minutes. Audiences actually entered the show in shifts.
Dodd is also famous for his buck teeth, and there is an interesting story behind how these came about. When he was only seven years old he was dared by his school friends to ride his bike with his eyes shut.
He accepted the dare, crashed his bike and received a number of facial injuries as a result, including his buck teeth. But instead of having a negative effect on his performances, these teeth have actually endeared him to fans over the decades.
As we all know, Dodd has a number of popular catchphrases that he uses on a regular basis, which he will probably use at the show in Southport, such as: “How tickled I am!” And do not be surprised if the old feather duster comes out as part of his act.
His first big break into show business came about when he was twenty seven years old when he appeared at the Nottingham Playhouse. Before the show, he sat in a local Milk Bar for most of the afternoon, going over and over his lines before stepping into the theatre.
Following this successful show he became increasingly popular throughout the country, and eventually ended up as top billing at Blackpool in 1958.
In the past, he has performed for some of the most prestigious guests in the world, including an appearance in 2006 in front of Prince Charles, and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
